Second of 2 youngest convicts released from Florida prison

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The second of the two youngest people to be tried for murder as adults in the United States was released from a Florida prison Saturday.

Catherine Jones and her brother, Curtis Fairchild, were sentenced to 18 years in prison for the 1999 shooting death of their father’s girlfriend, Sonya Speights, in Brevard County.

They were 13 and 12 years old at the time. After their conviction, they were sent to the South Bay Correctional Facility.

The duo claimed a relative sexually abused them and they spent two weeks plotting to kill him, their father, and Speights, because they never protected them from the alleged abuser.

Fairchild was released earlier this week.

At the time, the siblings were the country's youngest people to be tried as adults and convicted of murder. They are now 29 and 30 years old.

Both will spend the rest of lives on probation, though they could petition the court for early termination.
