Deputies: Man fatally shoots self after shooting woman, K-9 in Deltona

DELTONA, Fla. — Deputies launched a massive manhunt for Marlon McCray, 38, late Wednesday night in a Buttonwood Avenue neighborhood near Captain Drive in Deltona.

Deputies said they were responding to a domestic dispute at a home at 11:08 p.m.

Erica Holmes, 38, told investigators that she and her live-in boyfriend, McCray, had been arguing. Authorities said that during the argument, Holmes told McCray that she thought they should separate and that angered McCray.

Investigators said McCray threw a computer and a beer can. During the argument, Holmes fled the house and sought refuge in a Chevrolet Malibu parked in the driveway, authorities said.

Investigators said McCray came out of the house armed with a metal jack and threatened to hit Holmes and the car.

Investigators said McCray then went back into the house.

A few minutes later, McCray came out with a gun and fired into the vehicle, hitting Holmes, authorities said. He then ran between a couple of houses and into the woods.

During the search for McCray fired more shots, hitting a K-9 named Endo in the neck area.

"The deputy got after him with the dog. The dog, while he was chasing him, more shots were fired and the dog was hit," Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said.

Deputies found McCray dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound a few hundred yards from the house.

Meanwhile, other deputies carried Holmes out of the car to the paramedics, who tended to her wounds and drove her to a hospital.

Holmes was shot in her arm and stomach.

Endo is being treated at DeLand Animal Hospital. Holmes and Endo are expected to recover from their injuries.

"It's a situation that could have been even worse then what it is. You have a man that shot one person, that shot a police dog, shot at our deputies and apparently has taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Johnson said. "We're very glad that it's over."

Holmes' two children, a 5-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, were home at the time of the incident. They were not hurt and were turned over to a relative.

Records show McCray had a lengthy criminal record which includes 17 felony arrests and six convictions in South Florida.
