ORLANDO, FLa. — After a Leon County judge ruled last week that Gov. Ron DeSantis’ ban on mask mandates for students is unconstitutional, many school districts are now looking at requiring masks for classrooms.

Orange County was one of several school districts that defied DeSantis’ executive order and voted to implement a mask mandate last week.

The policy, which begins today, requires all students to wear a mask unless parents specifically ask and provide a doctor’s note to show the students have a medical exemption.

Brevard and Lake counties have scheduled meetings on Monday to discuss whether to implement a mask mandate for their respective districts.

The Brevard Public Schools meeting will take place Monday, Aug. 30, at the School Board building at 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera at 10 a.m.

In Lake County, the superintendent will meet with area health officials before recommending a mask policy to the school board.

The board will then take up the issue at a special sometime this week.

Volusia County Schools is also expected to discuss its mask policy on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 6 p.m.
