The city of Sanford on Nov. 9 approved the Sanford Airport Authority to issue up to $13 million in bonds to add more than 800 parking spaces and to rehabilitate both the terminal apron and runway 9L/27R. The bonds will help fund more than $36 million worth of work.

The projects include:

  • Runway 9L Rehabilitation: The $23 million project includes improvements to the airport’s main commercial runway, with the goal to start work in January and complete by the fall of next year. The project also is receiving funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Florida Department of Transportation, FAA’s passenger facility charges and other local funds.
  • Terminal Ramp Rehabilitation: The $7 million project will begin either late January or early February, with a goal to finish before the summer season of flight activity. The funding comes from the FAA’s passenger facility charges.
  • Remote parking lot: The project was identified as a need in the 2022 Airport Master Plan and the bidding for the project will start this month. Work would complete next November. The $6 million lot will reduce the frequency of having to use overflow lots like grants but will not end overflow need.
