ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — It’s been more than a year since two mothers and three young children were killed in a crash at an intersection some drivers have called dangerous.

Now, safety changes are being made to try to prevent another crash.
Emergency responders described the scene of the accident in 2021 on Clarcona Ocoee Road and Gaymar Drive as the worst crash they’d ever seen. The driver responsible for the crash was arrested in March.

Five people died in the crash. Immediately after, loved ones were calling for change at that intersection.
Orange County’s Public Works added a traffic signal, pavement markings showing the speed limit and speed feedback signs.

The team did a full study, analyzing all traffic volume and crash data. Once they saw a signal was needed, they designed it and constructed it using concrete poles instead of steel ones that take much longer to install.
