DEBARY, Fla. — A Volusia County man called 911 Monday afternoon to say he shot his own son.

Deputies first responded to a home off Hollow Pine Drive in DeBary around 3 p.m., because a couple was having a disagreement with their son who had just been released from jail.

Deputies did what they could and left, but an hour later, a 32-year-old man was dead.

The earlier dispute was about whether the son would be able to drive one the family vehicles.
Investigators are still trying to sort out exactly what happened next.

"The reason why the parents had said that was, he was arrested last night in Daytona Beach Shores in possession of narcotics," said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Deputies originally left the home after 45 minutes because there was no violence or threat of violence.

Investigators said it was unclear exactly what happened after that or how the dispute escalated.

"An hour later, the father calls 911, says he was in an altercation with his son and he shot him," Chitwood said.

The father claims he was injured during the incident.

Neighbors gathered outside the crime scene tape Monday night, waiting for word on what happened.

"I was crossing my fingers that, you know, it was maybe an accident or something like that, but it doesn't seem to be that way," said neighbor Mike McCurdy.

Another neighbor, Karen Chasez, said, “It is always a sad day when a family dispute results in the death of a family member."

The sheriff said they have not been called to the home before, but the son had a previous drug arrest this year.

The names of those involved have not been released and no charges have been filed.
