Residents don't want to lose library in Brevard County

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The deteriorating Mims Scottsmoor Public Library building has Brevard County officials wondering what they will do.

Plans to replace the facility fell through eight years ago.

When it was library building opened in 1998, it was not intended to be a permanent structure.

In recent years, flooring and roofing repairs were made, but, a county spokesman said the building is past its lifespan. Some patrons say while that may be the case for the building, the library itself hasn't outlived its usefulness.

"Everyone goes to it and that's the way I like it," library patron Ryan Taylor said.

The library building is made up of portable buildings. The county intended to replace it with a permanent structure in 2006, but that plan was abandoned because of budget cuts.

"Just leave it right there. Do what you got to do. Don't move it," patron Cheryl Geary said of the library.

One recent proposal was to move library services three miles away, to Cuyler Park.

Officials said it would involve a partnership with parks and recreation and a sharing of some existing facilities. A new smaller building would also be constructed.

So far that idea hasn't gained much popularity.

"It's a big community piece for us, because the whole community out here on this end, the north end, uses it," Taylor said.

Some area residents have created a Facebook page to rally for a new library.
