VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Volusia County deputy was going nearly twice the speed limit when he collided with three cars last week, according to a report.

Edgewater police said two people were seriously hurt in the crash.

Witnesses said Deputy Cory Freeburn did not have the cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens on before the wreck.

Volusia County deputies and Edgewater police will not confirm whether that was the case.

The crash happened on U.S. 1 and Marion Avenue in Edgewater shortly before 9 p.m. on Dec. 19.

According to a crash report, Freeburn was going 81 mph while responding to a non-emergency call when his cruiser smashed into a car that had pulled into the intersection from Marion Avenue.

Both people in that car were seriously injured.

“On the driver’s side door, I know that had to get the Jaws of Life to get the people out,” witness Lauren David said.

The crash caused the deputy’s cruiser to cross the median and hit two other vehicles on South Ridgewood Avenue, the report said.

The people in those two cars are expected to be OK.

Freeburn was reassigned to an administrative position that will not require him to drive.

He will stay in that position until the Sheriff’s Office’s investigation is complete.
