LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced it has found the remains of a girl who had been missing since 2016 near Yeehaw Junction.
An Amber Alert was issued for Diana Alvarez in May 2016, who was 9 years old at the time, and it was canceled Saturday.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said workers in the area found the remains and contacted law enforcement officials immediately.
The remains have been identified as Alvarez, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Lee County deputies detained Jorge Guerrero on June 4, 2016. Deputies said they believed Guerrero was a person of interest in the case but Alvarez was not with him.
Guerrero has been charged with Alvarez’s murder, and the State Attorney’s Office said it is seeking the death penalty in the case.
