Puppies rescued from mill ready for adoption

ORLANDO, Fla. — More than 50 dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill are ready for adoption in Orlando.

The puppies were among 300 dogs rescued this weekend in Sarasota.

The dogs were rescued from cages and unsanitary conditions.

"She's had doctors and technician attention 24/7, around the clock since she came in," said rescuer Kelly Bishop.

The puppies were moved to a poodle rescue in Brevard County so the other 40 left behind can get the same kind of help.

"We all come from walks of life and we all do different things. But we come together for the good of the animal, and there's such a real need," rescuer Peggy Cronic said.

Just about every available cage at the animal hospital is holding a rescued dog. Some of them came in such bad shape that they required medical attention.

On average, rescuers said they each needed about $1,000 in medical care.

Florida Little Dog Rescue and East Orlando Animal Hospital have taken care of the costs, which totaled more than $50,000.

Each dog required all of its shots, grooming, cleaning, and in some cases, surgery.

But the goal is to get them as healthy as possible so families can adopt them this weekend.

"Understand that it's going to be work and you are taking on a project, but you are doing the right thing," Bishop said.

Charges are pending against the Sarasota couple who ran the puppy mill, but officials said they could face charges of animal neglect.

The adoption fee costs between $150 and $350.
