ORLANDO, Fla. — After making big news in mid-June for surpassing $5 a gallon, the average price of gas is the U.S. made headlines for a different — and much better — reason on Thursday.

Nationally, the average for a gallon of regular unleaded fell to $3.99, according to AAA.

A 2-cent drop from the previous day allowed the cost to slide under the $4 per gallon mark.
Compared to a week ago, the national average is down 14 cents.
In contrast to one month ago, consumers will pay about 68 cents less.
On June 14, gas hit a record high in the U.S., climbing to $5.01 per gallon.

Back here in the Sunshine State, gas prices continue to decrease as well.
On Thursday, AAA reported the average gallon of regular unleaded at $3.70, down 2 more cents from Wednesday and down more than $1 from the all-time high of $4.89 recorded on June 13.
If you plan to fill up an empty, 15-gallon tank on Thursday based on Florida or national averages, expect to pay between $55-$60.
