SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded over $1.2 million in grant funding to first responder organizations in Puerto Rico this week.
The money was distributed through the agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants program for fiscal year 2025.
The Puerto Rico funding is part of a larger $648 million allocation made available by FEMA in May 2026 across three fire grant programs. In addition to the Assistance to Firefighters Grants, the fiscal year 2025 initiatives include the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program and the Fire Prevention and Safety program.
Grants awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program can be used by recipients to outfit personnel with compliant personal protective equipment, acquire emergency response vehicles, and develop health, wellness, and resiliency initiatives.
Specific allocations in Puerto Rico include nearly $790,000 to the Municipality of Toa Baja to acquire vehicles for its Fire Department. In addition, the Puerto Rico Firefighters Corps received more than $440,000 to fund operations and safety.
The agency will continue awarding funds directly to fire departments, first responder agencies, and fire prevention organizations under its fiscal year 2025 grant programs over the next week.
