Prominent downtown Orlando leader Thomas Chatmon dies at age 68

Thomas Chatmon Jr., a key figure in shaping downtown Orlando, has died.

The 68-year-old executive director of the city of Orlando’s Downtown Development Board and Community Redevelopment Agency died July 23, according to multiple social media tributes to the executive. David Barilla has been serving as acting director while Chatmon was on leave due to a medical issue.

Chatmon played a role in several major downtown developments, including the Creative Village, the Amway Center, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Chase Plaza and 55 West. He also helped formulate the city’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic’s negative impact on downtown businesses.
