Prosecutors confirmed Friday that the state will seek the death penalty against Bryan James Riley.
State Attorney Brian Haas announces the indictment of Riley on twenty-two charges, including four counts of first-degree murder.
Riley is also charged with one count of attempted first degree murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated child abuse, two counts of burglary, seven counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of animal cruelty, one count of arson, two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, and two counts of shooting within an occupied dwelling.
Riley was arrested after a shootout with Polk County deputies on Sept. 5 at a neighborhood near Lakeland.
Riley, 33, is being held without bond for the slayings of Justice Gleason, 40; his 33-year-old girlfriend, Theresa Lanham; their son, Jody, who was born in May; and Lanham’s 62-year-old mother, Catherine Delgado.
He is also accused of killing the family’s dog and shooting the 11-year-old girl multiple times.
Judd said the sheriff’s office is collecting donations for the family of the 11-year-old girl to help cover her medical bills and funeral costs for her family members. The public can contribute by clicking here and selecting “quadruple homicide victims.”
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd has called Riley “evil in the flesh” after he was charged with the mass shooting.
