Deputies investigate deadly hit-and-run crash in Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened Saturday in Lakeland.

The crash occurred near the intersection of U.S. 98 and Innovation Drive.

At around 7:15 a.m. deputies and Polk County Fire Rescue responded to a report of a person lying on the east shoulder of U.S. 98.

When they arrived, they found a 43-year-old Lakeland man dead on the side of the road.

The initial investigation shows that sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. Saturday, the victim was walking north along the edge of the northbound lane when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that did not stop and left the scene.

According to a news release, based on evidence found at the scene, the suspect’s vehicle is a late 1990s to mid-2000s General Motors truck or large SUV.

There may be damage to the front passenger side of the vehicle.
