WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy fatally shot himself early Thursday after he shot at police officers and barricaded himself in a home for more than six hours, the West Melbourne Police Department said.
Michael Proctor's grandmother called 911 shortly before midnight Thursday to report that he was throwing things in their Martin Lane home, West Melbourne police Capt. Richard Cordeau said.

Proctor emerged from a bedroom while officers were interviewing relatives and began shooting at police, Cordeau said.
"Officers retreated toward the front door with three other occupants of the home as the suspect continued firing on officers," he said. "Officers were not able to return fire."

Police said two people escaped from the home. Relatives told Channel 9's Ty Russell that Proctor's deaf uncle and a family friend are the people who escaped.
"I'm still in shock to tell you the truth, like the rest of my family," said the teen's aunt, Libby Morey.
Police said they threw tear gas into the home around 6:30 a.m. and found Proctor had shot himself with a low-caliber long gun.
Police said Friday morning that a .22 rifle with a scope was taken from Proctor before police arrived and that he tried to fire it twice at his father, but the gun jammed.
Proctor had another rifle with a scope in his bedroom and that's the weapon he fired at officers and used to end his life.
Police said it's unclear how he obtained the weapons.

Morey said that he was an honor role student at Melbourne High School. She said that her nephew's motive is unknown and that she was unaware there was a gun in the home.
Relatives told Channel 9's Melonie Holt that Proctor may have tried LSD something police said that they are now investigating.
"This is never the resolution we want," Cordeau said. "This is a young life taken too soon -- 16 years old."

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office's SWAT team assisted police during the hours-long standoff.
Martin Lane and Walker Avenue were closed and several nearby homes were evacuated during the incident, Cordeau said.
