Officers closed the mall, evacuated it and systematically cleared it, Gillett said.
SANFORD, Fla. — Gillett said a group of people who were with the pair ran into the mall through the Burlington store.
Police said no shots were fired in the mall, and no one else was injured.
Investigators said they're searching for Lewis Thomas Boone, 19, in connection with the attempted murder of Washington. Police said they believe the two know one another.
Washington's 14-year-old cousin spoke to a girl whom Boone knows prior to the shooting, investigators said.
"That created some type of altercation, some type of issue between them both that led to the shooting," Sanford police spokesman Ronny Neal said.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to Boone's arrest.
