Police ID man allegedly shot, killed by girlfriend's ex-husband

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. — Winter Springs police have issued an arrest warrant for a man they said shot and killed his ex-wife's boyfriend early Wednesday morning.

Michael Friedman, 63, is wanted on a first-degree felony murder charge.

When investigators arrived at the home near Seminola Boulevard and Winter Park Drive, the suspect was nowhere to be found.

"We met with two victims -- a male victim had multiple gunshot wounds and a female victim that had some type of laceration. We don’t know from who or what. Both victims were transported. Unfortunately, the male passed away from his wounds," said Capt. Matt Tracht, of the Winter Springs Police Department. "The victims knew the suspect. We believe it is her ex-husband, and the other victim is a boyfriend."

Police identified the victim has James McCarthy, 49, of Winter Park.

Friedman may be heading to south Florida near the Delray Beach area. He's driving a 2014 Hyundai Azera with Florida tag N722V4.

"We believe that's where he's from, and he came up here to do this, and then he was heading back," said Tracht.

Channel 9 learned Friedman's ex-wife, who is a teacher in Seminole County, got a restraining order against him in 2013, saying she feared for her own life.

Police said there were two teenagers in the home where the incident happened.

The teens are being interviewed by police. Investigators have not said whether they saw what happened or whether Friedman is their father.

"Winter Springs has one of the lowest crime rates, so this is pretty shocking for us," said Tracht.

The woman is recovering at Florida Hospital Altamonte and is expected to be OK.
