TAVARES, Fla. — Tavares police say they have identified the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu involved in a Tuesday drive-by shooting that injured a 2-year-old girl.

Alicia Winters' mother was arrested Thursday night for a short period after police said she had helped her daughter avoid arrest.

While Winters is still on the loose, her mother was later released.

"She was arrested for a brief period of time and then she was un-arrested now that she's decided to cooperate," Tavares Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Sarah Coursey.

Winters is not believed to have pulled the trigger but is facing several charges in connection with the shooting, investigators said.

Arrest warrants for two other people believed to be involved in the shooting were also forthcoming, the Tavares Police Department said.

The 2-year-old girl who was injured in the shooting at a condominium complex has been released from the hospital and is recovering, her mother Tiffany Collins said.

Sy'mia Pierce was outside playing in a pickup truck with her brother at about 9 p.m. on West Rosewood Lane in the Rosewood Homes complex near Captain Haynes and Dead River roads, when she was grazed by a bullet fired out of a dark-colored Malibu, police said.

Collins told Channel 9 that she was excited and relieved that police have identified suspects in the shooting.

"I'm happy that they're getting charged," she said. "I hope they suffer in jail."

Police announced Wednesday evening that they believe they have found the car in question.

Sy'mia was still healing but OK, Collins said.

"She's playing and everything," she said. "Just still a little bit of pain."

The shooting remains under investigation.
