WATCH: Plane goes off runway into Banana River in Merritt Island

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — A small plane skidded off the runway at Merritt Island Airport into the Banana River Sunday morning, Brevard County firefighters said.

The Piper PA-32 went off the runway after trying to take off around 9 a.m., officials said.

Firefighters said the four people aboard the plane escaped uninjured.

The plane went into the water where the runway ends.

The plane remained submerged in the Banana River into Sunday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
