CLERMONT, Fla. — Two people died Saturday morning when a single-engine plane crashed near a Clermont subdivision, the Clermont Police Department said.
The RV-8A plane crashed shortly before 9 a.m. in a field south of Crestridge Drive in the Skyridge Valley subdivision, east of Citrus Tower and North Ridge boulevards, said Clermont police Sgt. Shane Strickland.
The two people aboard the plane, who weren't publicly identified, are believed to have died upon impact, Strickland said.
"The cause of crash is not known," Strickland said. "No other buildings or persons were injured."
Mark Wells, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years, rushed to the mangled wreckage when he heard the plane crash.
“It sounded almost like a car going by,” Wells said. “I got a little emotional once I realized there were two [people] and they were gone.”
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.
