SANFORD, Fla. — Part of U.S. 17-92 was closed in both directions Tuesday afternoon in Sanford because of a major crash that left one person critically injured.

Police said an SUV crashed into an electric pole in the southbound lanes of U.S. 17-92, prompting a closure from State Road 417 to 27th Street.
Witnesses told Channel 9 they believe they saw five people in the vehicle, including children.

Police said Florida Power & Light has been called to the crash scene to repair the pole.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area as the road will likely be closed through at least 7 p.m.
