Oviedo City Council considering tax hike to help fund police, fire departments

OVIEDO, Fla. — Oviedo City Council members are meeting Monday night to decide on a proposed nearly 16% increase to the city's millage rate.

Leaders said it is needed to help fund the fire and police departments, but Mayor Megan Sladek said this is the worst time to raise taxes.

“To ask it of people now, I can’t wrap my brain around it,” she said.

For the owner of a $350,000 home, the hike would even out to an increase of $155 a year, or nearly $13 a month.

Channel 9 Seminole County reporter Jeff Levkulich asked Sladek if the city is considering farming out the Oviedo Fire Department to the county like so many cities have already done. She said right now they would pay more to do that, but that it is something they could look at down the road.
