Osceola retirement community to open ‘pod’ for COVID-19 vaccine

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a news conference Wednesday that he wants the state to administer between 50,000 to 60,000 COVID-19 vaccines daily.

Part of that plan involves opening several points of distribution or “PODS” throughout Florida.

On Thursday health officials will open a pod at the Solivita Retirement Community near Kissimmee.

The site will be the second in Central Florida to open this week.

The first was at Sun City Center, a retirement community near Tampa on Wednesday.

DeSantis said the state received about 266,000 doses of the vaccine this week, and he expects to receive 307,000 more doses next week.

The nation has been dealing with a supply shortage, but President Joe Biden has promised to up the allotments.

The Biden administration also promised that states will be notified of their shipments three weeks in advance to allow for better planning.
