ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A man is in custody after officials said he was responsible for the death of a 5-month-old infant.
Officials with the Ormond Beach Police Department responded to a residence on North Yonge Street after receiving reports of an infant having difficulty breathing.
Medics also responded on scene and transported the child to an area hospital, where the child later died, according to Ormond Beach police.
The infant's biological father, 23-year-old Calib Scott, was arrested in connection to the death. Police believe Scott slammed the 5-month-old's head into the ground and against a changing table, killing the boy.
In a 911 call, Scott seemed to be a concerned parent, as he can be heard patting the back of the boy trying to get him to move again.
"I need some help," Scott said during the call. "My son is only like 5, 6 months old."
Scott was supposed to be caring for the child while his wife was at work.
Officials said Scott's home was filled with dog feces and urine and the child had old cuts and cigarette burns to his body.
Scott faces charges of neglect of a child, aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder involving aggravated child abuse, according to officials.
The investigation remains ongoing.
