ORLANDO, Fla. — Two undercover officers were involved in the shooting death of a suspect Wednesday night, according to authorities.
Police said Izzy Colon, who was shot and killed, was armed with a gun and refused to surrender.
The shooting happened at the Palmas Altas apartments on Semoran Boulevard and Pershing Avenue.
The undercover drug officers were in the middle of a separate investigation when they said Colon and Ricardo Caban started openly firing weapons into the air.
“They saw two people firing a firearm,” said Orlando Police Sgt. Wanda Ford.
Police said when the officers approached the men, a confrontation broke out.
“After the confrontation, one suspect was down, and one was taken into custody,” Ford said.
Caleb Milligan, a friend of Colon’s, heard the shots, ran to see what happened and saw his friend lying on the ground dying.
“I go around the corner, the first dude I see—he’s in the grass right here, and they’re screaming, going crazy,” Milligan said.
A memorial was set up Thursday where Colon was shot and killed
Rasmus Okholm was being pulled over by an Orlando police officer for a traffic violation when the action unfolded.
“As soon as he came up to the door, he got this radio call that a gunshot fired, something like that. I was given my driver’s license back, and he just drove off,” Okholm said.
Police have not released additional information about the shooting.
The officers, who have not been identified, were not injured, police said.
Both officers will be placed on standard administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates.
Caban’s criminal history shows multiple arrests in 2014 for domestic violence-related incidents.
He's being held in jail on no bond.
