Orlando motorcyclist, 58, killed avoiding head-on crash, troopers say

A 58-year-old Orlando motorcyclist was killed Saturday as he tried to avoid a head-on collision with an SUV on Econlockhatchee Trail in Orange County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported about 12:25 p.m. on Econlockhatchee Trail near Grande Valencia Drive, troopers said.

The motorcycle rider, who was not identified, was driving south on Econlockhatchee Trail when a northbound Ford Escape veered into his lane, the FHP said.

The man turned his motorcycle onto its side in an attempt to avoid hitting the SUV, investigators said.

He was thrown from the motorcycle, troopers said.

He was taken to Florida Hospital East, where he was pronounced dead.

The FHP was investigating why the Ford Escape, driven by Samantha Legerton, 29, of Orlando, swerved in front of the motorcycle.

No charges were immediately filed.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
