ORLANDO, Fla. — Construction could soon begin on a permanent memorial honoring the 49 people killed in the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting.
Orlando city leaders approved the master plan for the memorial during a City Commission meeting Monday, clearing the way for the project to move forward with building permits.
The planned memorial will include a reflecting pool and a healing garden, creating a space for remembrance and reflection.
The Pulse nightclub shooting on June 12, 2016, claimed the lives of 49 people and injured dozens more.
The tragedy remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history.
With the master plan now approved, the city can move toward the next steps needed to begin construction of the permanent memorial.
