‘When are we getting the shot?’ Some assisted living facilities say they haven’t received COVID-19 vaccine

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Some directors and family members from assisted living facilities say their residents still have not received the vaccine.

This comes just a day after the state announced it had offered the shot to every nursing home and assisted living facility in the state.

Channel 9 found two people from two different facilities who say that state officials’ claims that all 4,000 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the state have been visited is just not true.

“Our residents are asking us, ‘When are we getting the shot?’ The family members are saying, ‘When are we getting a shot?’”

Erika Sevilla gets emotional herself. Her mom and aunt are in Keystone Villas Assisted Living Center in Osceola County and, for weeks, there has been no sign of the shot.

The facility said, “We are actually working with Walgreens at this center and still awaiting confirmation of our date.”

However, Walgreens said, “The state took over on January 23rd. When this occurred, we cancelled the clinic and notified the director.”

Because of that mix-up, Sevilla worries every minute of every hour of every day about her mom and aunt.

“I get chills,” she said. “I don’t know why they are waiting.”

Beggs Pointe Assisted Living Facility in Orange County is also waiting. It partnered with CVS, had a clinic set up for Jan. 23, then the state stepped in and said CDR Maguire would be handling their vaccinations.

Staff received an email saying it was a 24-to-72-hour notice, and the company got there Sunday.

“We’re like, ‘We’re not ready. I mean, we didn’t know you guys were coming right now,’” said Elden Santos with Beggs Pointe Assisted Living Facility.

He told them to come back Monday but “they didn’t show,” Santos said, and now he’s being told they will be there sometime next week.
