Rollins College expecting bloom of 2 ‘corpse’ plants next week

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Rollins College is expecting the blooming of two unique and stinky plants.

Two amorphophallus titanum, better known as the “corpse” plant, are expected to open up sometime next week.

The pair of endangered corpses plants are in the Rollins College greenhouse and could start blooming as soon as Monday.

Officials said corpse plants are famous for being among the world’s largest plants and the most difficult to cultivate.

It can take more than 10 years for them to bloom, and they rarely bloom in captivity.

Why are they called corpse plants? When they do bloom, they emit an odor of disgusting, rotting flesh.

Officials said having two corpse plants bloom around the same time is almost unprecedented.
