ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The University of Central Florida is doing something different with its academic calendar this year to limit potential COVID-19 exposure after Thanksgiving travel.
Students who were attending in-person lectures will be learning online after the holiday break.
“We knew that there would always be some concerns about individuals going back home,” UCF President Alexander Cartwright said.

The majority of students have been taking their courses virtually, but several thousand have been learning in person on campus, and UCF has taken several precautions this semester to keep them safe from campus testing to student contact tracers.
The decision, Cartwright said, benefits the entire region. Students don’t stay solely on campus, so the possibility of transmission in the community that could have happened from a student who was exposed during travel is lessened.
“This just minimizes those interactions, and helps us to do the best that we can to help the society,” Cartwright said.
