ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Residents at the Arden Villas Apartments said they can’t help but be scared after what happened to Miya Marcano, but they said management at the apartment complex has made changes since her death.

Investigators said Armando Caballero killed Miya Marcano. Caballero worked as a maintenance worker at the complex before committing suicide.

Shelly Nonnenberg, a resident at the Arden Villas Apartments, said she had run-ins with Caballero before.

“That maintenance man has been in my apartment before,” she said. “Me and my roommate have talked about the problems we’ve have with him before. How he came in before. It could’ve been me. It could’ve be my roommate.”

Preiss Management runs the Arden Villas complex. According to Nonnenberg, management has made security upgrades since Marcano’s death.

“There’s been people making sure people don’t follow people in. Checking IDs. I see they’ve added cameras,” Nonnenberg said.

There’s also a guard on duty 24/7. But Nonnenberg, like many of her neighbors, said the management company needs to do more.

“If Arden Villas doesn’t see their residents calling for safety they probably wouldn’t do anything on their own,” she said.

Channel 9 found out Orion on Orpington, an apartment complex two miles away, is also managed by Preiss. It also caters to students.

Meredyth Craig said managers made safety upgrades in her complex as well in the last week.
