Packed weather shelters set to close as cold conditions continue

ORLANDO, Fla. — Many people across Central Florida are waking up in cold-weather shelters.

Local counties started opening them up last week, to keep people out of the freezing cold.

A packed shelter at the Coalition of the Homeless in Orlando is set to shut down Monday morning.

The shelter was so busy that organizers feared they would run out of beds.

Despite the shelter advertising that it will not turn anyone away, several decided to sleep in tents on the sideway nearby.

The Orange County government said it is supporting the Homeless Services Network during the ongoing cold.

It is helping with notifying residents, homeless individuals and people without stable housing that cold-weather warming centers are open.

With the county’s assistance, the network will be able to expand shelter capacity and open two overflow sites.

They need all the help they can get and their biggest concern is staffing.
