OUC celebrates Florida Lineworker Appreciation Day, here’s what it means

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Friday marks Florida Lineworker Appreciation Day, a day that is celebrated every year on Aug. 26.

This day honors what lineworkers do to help people get the reliable electricity they need.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, utility line work ranks as one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America.

Lineworkers could replace storm-damaged utility poles, raise downed powerlines, install and repair underground lines and work day or night in severe weather conditions.

The Orlando Utilities Commission highlighted what a day in the life of a lineworker looks like.

OUC line technician Jessica Giles started out as a nurse before switching to utility line work.

She learned a lot about the electrical industry from her father and said she hopes she can inspire others to join the field.
