Orlando police officers are taking new precautionary measures if they think they may be near a person showing signs of the coronavirus.

New guidelines include calling the fire department when necessary, because they have more protective gear.

Already, police officers are equipped with personal protective kits that include a gown, mask, gloves and an eye shield.

And they’re doing their part to ensure a clean workplace.

“(We’re) making sure that in the stations, they’re washing their hands, after calls, making sure that they’re ... taking the proper steps here, making sure that they have enough of the respirator masks, the goggles, the gloves,” said Orlando Fire Chief Ben Barksdale.

The Orlando Police Department has one officer in self-quarantine after a trip overseas. Sources say he is taking personal time off, but they are fighting to have the city pay for his time off.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says it has no one on self-quarantine, but staff have been told if they traveled overseas before March 9, they will have to quarantine. After that, they will quarantine without pay.
