Orlando police could install gun safes for resource officers in schools

ORLANDO, Fla. — Police may install safes in dozens of city schools for resource officers to access weapons and equipment in case of an emergency.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office this year installed safes in 120 schools in which they provided a resource officer.

A lawmaker is requesting around $71,000 in state funds so city police can do the same. The request covers 51 safes for city schools.

The city would pitch in around $23,000, but Orlando police say it’s also looking for the state’s help because the school district doesn’t provide money for the equipment.
