New robots give hospitalized children in Orlando ways to virtually socialize, explore without leaving their rooms

ORLANDO, Fla. — Whether delivering lab tests or simulating surgery, robots are changing the way our hospitals operate.

Orlando's AdventHealth for Children is using robots to offer pediatric patients a one-of-a-kind adventure.

Pediatric patients are able to direct their own "robot avatar," which is essentially an iPad fixed to a remote-controlled Segway. It allows them to take a virtual walk by moving down hallways and interacting with others without leaving their rooms.

The robot is the patient on the screen going around the unit and navigating, giving that child a sense of both control and socialization virtually.

Child Life Manager Chantelle Bennett said the robots offer an experience unlike any other area children's hospital.

“The robot I played with today is awesome. I love how it’s taller so you can see more of what’s around you,” said one patient.

AdventHealth said it hopes to one day put the robots out in the community so a sick child inside the hospital can still take part in any number of special moments or events on the outside, like family gatherings or a graduation.
