Neighbor Jennah Hughes said she first started noticing issues on Lake Olive four days ago.

“It’s gotten worse and worse,” she said. “These little tiny fish started popping up, and all of them were dead.”

That’s when Hughes said her brother got in this kayak, paddled around the lake and found dozens of bigger fish that were dead and floating around.

They reached out to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission along with the city to find out what was going on, concerned nearby construction or algae could be the cause.

City crews removed most of the dead fish, and city staff also measured oxygen levels.

The city said those levels were lower than usual, but they have not given a reason as to why.

“I don’t know what happens now,” Hughes said. “Who comes out here and helps the wildlife come back? All these little minnows are coming to the surface and gasping for air. Like, what do we do now?”

The city said staff did not observe any visual signs or odors of pollutants in the lake when they visited the lake. Channel 9 alos reached out to FWC for information, but have not heard back.
