Florida lawmakers in mad-dash near end of legislative session

ORLANDO, Fla. — From teacher pay raises, to affordable housing, to letting college athletes make money: The Florida legislature is in a mad-dash to the finish.

Nothing is certain, except death and taxes. And Tallahassee, lawmakers are spending those taxes while bills are dying.

On the dead list is a plan to merge some state universities.

Also, the bill that would have prohibited the arrest of kids under the age of 10, will not pass.

But other things are in better shape.

There is an agreement for about $600 million for teacher pay raises, but details have not been released.

Meanwhile, a plan to let college athletes make money off their images while in school passed the Senate.

And for the first time in more than a decade, lawmakers have agreed to use the affordable housing trust fund, some $200 million, to pay for affordable housing.
