Fact Check: Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign ad featuring Obama

ORLANDO, Fla. — Is it an Obama endorsement? No, but you might not know that from one Bernie Sanders ad.

The add is airing as the Democratic race is down to just two main contenders – Sanders and Joe Biden.

During the ad, former President Barack Obama is heard saying, “Bernie is somebody that has the virtue of saying what he believes.”

Obama has not endorsed anyone in the 2020 race.

"Great authentic, great passion and is fearless," Obama says in the ad.

While Obama did say these things about Sanders, as University of Central Florida political science professor John Hanley points out, the ad comes from several sources.

"Multiple speeches, some going back to 2006," Hanley said.

In fact, one audio clip is from not President Obama, but then-Senator Obama.

And then Obama is heard saying, "That's right, feel the burn." That clip comes from the 2016 Democratic convention in Philadelphia, when Obama was supporting Hillary Clinton.

“You look at the context of the convention, I think what Obama was doing there was trying to cajole Sanders supporters into backing Hillary Clinton," Hanley said.

Overall, Heath rates this ad as half true. It's Obama's voice, but it's not an endorsement and it's from several speeches out of context.

Exit polls have shown Sanders struggling to attract African American voters, something that cost him in South Carolina.

Sanders isn’t the only candidate invoking Obama. Biden, who served two terms as vice president under Obama, has his own ad featuring the former president.
