‘Eternally grateful’: Pet Alliance receives about $1M in donations after shelter destroyed in fire

ORLANDO, Fla. — Central Floridians have stepped up to help the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando after its main animal shelter on Conroy Road caught fire last month.

The building was deemed a total loss and 13 cats died in the blaze.

“I’ve been using the word ‘overwhelming’ a lot lately truly it is that,” said Cathy Rodgers.

In about two weeks, the animal shelter has collected about $1 million. Pet Alliance’s goal is to raise $2 million a year for operating costs.

“I had some idea that people liked Pet Alliance because so many people adopted from us, but I had no idea the community would step us in this way,” Rodgers said.

Pet Alliance turned to the community for help. Not only has it received pet food and money, some donated office space like a unit it’s now using for storage. Its goal now is to raise $10 million to build a brand-new facility.

“We want everybody to know we are eternally grateful for everything the community has done,” Rodgers said.
