Orange County Sheriff John Mina said the incident started after a man, identified as Edenilson Urbina, 18, on a motorcycle was pulled over at a gas station for a traffic stop for an illegal tag.

Deputies said after Smith pulled over, he took off running.

Mina said some sort of “confrontation” happened, and the deputy, identified as Deputy Sheriff Bruce Stolk, shot Smith because he was in fear for his life after he believed the man was reaching for a weapon.

Stolk was not injured in the shooting, Mina said.
