COVID-19 updates: Florida reports 146 more deaths, almost 6,000 new coronavirus cases

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida Department of Health officials reported a total of 5,922 new COVID-19 cases Friday, with 1,175 of those cases in Central Florida.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 1,898,223 cases of the virus reported in Florida.

The number of negative COVID-19 tests in the state increased by 26,855, bringing the total number of cases to 9,137,648.

The state on Tuesday also reported 146 additional COVID-19-related deaths, bringing the state’s death toll of residents and nonresidents to 30,624.

Of the most recent COVID-19-related deaths, 33 were reported in Central Florida; including 10 in Lake County, six each in Polk and Osceola, four in Volusia, three in Sumter and two each in both Brevard and Marion counties.

Flagler, Seminole and Orange counties reported no deaths.

On Wednesday the National Institutes of Health announced the launch of a billion-dollar study to try to understand why up to one-third of those who are infected with the COVID-19 virus suffer symptoms that persist months later.

The study will track those suffering from the condition the NIH calls “Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection,” or PASC.

Those with PASC are commonly known as “long-haulers” because symptoms of the infection have persisted for weeks and months.
