Apopka residents fed up with flooding that’s soaked their neighborhood for 2 months

APOPKA, Fla. — People have had enough of the standing water that has soaked an Apopka neighborhood for two months.

The city of Apopka initially said the solution to the problem was to wait for the water to evaporate, but two months later and the water soaking Clear Lake Estates is now covered in what looks like algae.

The city pressed pause on a future subdivision project in the area, but leaders said they need to meet with the St. John’s Water Management District before they can say anything else.

But people who live in the neighborhood say they aren’t convinced that meeting is going to happen, because they were told they would have answers by now.

Venus Griffith is fed up with all the flooding in her neighborhood, which was an issue even before Hurricane Ian dumped inches of rain in central Florida.

“It was no problem until five years ago, they built over here Clear Lake Landing and that’s when I noticed a problem with the lake,” Griffith said.

The city has continued to approve more construction in the area until Wednesday night.

“I want to know, is it the building creating this?” Commissioner Doug Bankson asked. “If that’s the case, then we need to stop this until we have that figured out.”

Commissioners agreed to table a zoning change that would allow more homes to be built east of state Road 429 around Clear Water Lake until they are able to get answers from St. John’s River Water Managment District. That’s supposed to happen before Nov. 16.

Griffith said she was glad to hear that, but she’s still skeptical.

“I have fear that I’m gonna lose my house because no one in City Hall cares,” she said.

A spokesperson for St. John’s said the city did recently reach out to set up a meeting, but so far a date has not been set.
