Allowing drinking in the street on Halloween was ‘an experiment that didn’t work out so well,’ Orlando mayor says

ORLANDO, Fla. — City officials said they likely won’t allow people drink alcohol on the streets like on Halloween again.

The idea was to get people out into the open air instead of packing tight into small bars, but more than 20,000 people filled the streets with little social distancing and very few masks.

In fact, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said about 80% of people in the bar district Saturday were not wearing masks.

“That was an experiment that didn’t work out so well,” Dyer said. “We probably won’t be revisiting it again. But I am disappointed that some of the revelers on Halloween didn’t pay more attention to keeping on, not their Halloween, but their pandemic mask.”

Orange County Health Officer Dr. Raul Pino added, “it must be really frustrating for everyone else that’s making sacrifices to see that there are few people that didn’t want to wear a mask. There are families who haven’t seen their elderly parents in a few months.”

Pino said our hospital bed availability is at a very health point right now, and that although we continue to see signs of increasing cases, our recovery rate remains at 95%.
