ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — AdventHealth has moved from yellow status to code red after a significant jump in cases over the weekend, officials said.
More than 100,000 people have COVID-19 across Florida. And as that number increases, so do hospitalizations.

More than 750 beds are full at AdventHealth with coronavirus patients.
“It’s definitely on the increase and this isn’t totally unexpected,” said Dr. Tim Hendrix, AdventHealth Centra Care medical director. “We have seen an increase in community transmission of COVID-19 due to the holidays.”
Although our daily positive cases are higher than what we saw during the peak of the summer, AdventHealth said it’s not at the hospitalization peak just yet.

On Monday, AdventHealth moved from code green status to code yellow because of a “significant jump” in cases over the weekend. Now, they’re moving to red.
“Red status is designed to make sure that those patients who need health care the most have access to it,” said Brian Adams, CEO of AdventHealth Polk County.
But what would it take for AdventHealth to move into code black?

“There’s no one number or one trigger that drives us from one level to another,” Adams said. “It’s our total evaluation of how we make sure we have care for the right patient at the right time, every time.”
Only about 23% of local hospital beds are available, because so many people with COVID-19 need that level of treatment.
