AdventHealth doling out COVID-19 vaccines to workers as number of virus-related hospitalizations rise

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hospital leaders at AdventHealth said they’re concerned about the growing number of COVID-19 positive patients being admitted to the hospital.

But they said they’re hopeful they can keep control now that many frontline workers have received the vaccine.

Frontline workers around the country started getting the Pfizer shots on Tuesday, and it wasn’t long before they realized the vials that were supposed to contain five doses each still had medicine left over.

“We certainly heard the reports yesterday. We had noticed residual vaccine in the vials,” chief scientific officer Dr. Steven Smith said.

In a tweet, the U.S. Food and Drug Administation said “at this time, given the public health emergency, the FDA is advising that it is acceptable to use every full dose obtainable.”

Smith said for now AdventHealth is still going with initial advice of the five doses per vial.

“But we’re assessing that today,” Smith said.

Channel 9 asked Smith how many workers have opted out of receiving the vaccine, but he said it’s too soon to have those numbers.
