ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The teenage boy accused of shooting and killing a 16-year-old girl who was pregnant with his baby told investigators the shooting was a “freak accident.”

Lorenzo Larry, 17, told deputies he thought the safety was on the gun when he pointed it at De’Shayla Ferguson in October. He said the gun slipped and De’Shayla was shot in the head.

“It was an accident,” he said. “A freak accident.”

It’s the second time Lorenzo has been accused of shooting and killing someone.

Investigators said Jemile Pittman, 23, was killed months before De’Shayla. Lorenzo claimed that the shooting was self-defense, and charges have not been filed in that case.

After shooting De’Shayla, Lorenzo told deputies, “I just ran. I was scared. I was crying. Everything was just going through my mind.”

Lorenzo said the teens just had a gender reveal for their unborn baby, and the day before the shooting they argued about the child’s paternity. He said they had a separate disagreement seconds before the shooting.

Investigators said when he killed De’Shayla there were multiple people around and one of them allegedly hid the gun after the shooting.
