Orange County moving red-light traffic cameras to new locations

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County officials are relocating three red-light traffic cameras. Some of the cameras will begin monitoring their new intersections as early as next week.

One set of cameras is being moved to the intersection of Turkey Lake and Sand Lake roads, where officials said there have been 115 crashes in the past year.

Some drivers told Racquel Asa that they think the cameras will slow down traffic in the area.

"If you don't want to pay the price, just stop at the traffic light," resident Tareq Quarman said.

Channel 9's Racquel Asa found crews installing another set of cameras at John Young Parkway and Whisper Lake Boulevard.

The third set of cameras will be installed at Orange Blossom Trail and Consulate Drive, near the Florida Mall.

The cameras that are being installed came from intersections at Dean Road and University Boulevard, Hiawassee Road and Clarcona Ocoee Road and at Alafaya Trail and Lake Underhill Road.

Officials said the average lifespan of red-light cameras at a location is about four to five years, so those locations have done what they were supposed to.

They said at one of the locations violations dropped from nearly 100 each month to just 10.

They said that low number of violations didn't justify keeping the camera at the location.

"Those locations have done what they were supposed to," Krista Barber, with the Orange County Red-Light Camera Program said.

County officials said the cost to move the cameras is covered in the county's contract with the red-light camera company.
