ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A ministry that helps the homeless and others in need on Orange County’s west side is seeing a huge increase in the number of people coming to it for help.

Matthew’s Hope says it has seen a jump in requests for assistance following an end to the eviction moratorium, as well as a shift in what kind of things people need.

In the past, homeless might camp in a wooded area, and they could store food in bulk at their campsite.

Now, with areas being cleared out to make way for development, the homeless need more single-serve food items that they can easily take with them.

The number of people served each outreach day has jumped from around 150 a day to 200 in the second half of this year.

“Though our donation base is continuing to grow, The need is outpacing it for the first time in our 12-year history,” Pastor Scott Billue said.

Billue said he’s heard from more families since the moratorium on evictions was lifted. On the west side, as more land is developed, it’s also pushing homeless from camps into a more transient lifestyle that’s driving the need for more portable single-serve food items.

Matthew’s Hope is now reassessing how it will continue to provide and give hope to those in need.

“I’ve always just survived, you know, whatever you need to do to survive, but I don’t want to survive anymore,” single mother Janine Tapley said. “I want to live in a home and plan for the future.”

Billue said he’s seen people forced out of 19 homeless camps on the west side of Orange County this year.

He said he also expects the moratorium on evictions ending to be felt even more in the coming months.
